Word-Filled Women's Ministry by Gloria Furman and Kathleen B. Neilson, Editors

I have read the past few books by Gloria Furman on motherhood and the Gospel and have appreciated her encouragement and how she points mothers back to the Gospel and what truly matters. I also saw her at the Women's Gospel Coalition Conference and was so excited to see someone who has helped shape my view of motherhood. I also saw Kathleen Neilson at the conference, too, and heard her heart as she spoke. When I saw this book about Women's ministry, I was excited to read the thoughts of so many godly women who have walked closely with the Lord.

I appreciated the honesty in this book, as well as the encouragement. Each chapter is written by one or two other ladies. The Gospel is the central theme of this book and it clearly shows how big of a responsibility that women have in discipleship, as well as the role women play in the church.

I was challenged as I considered how my own church views Women's ministry and how so many Women's ministries are all about activities and other things besides investing in the lives of the women with the reminder that eternity is at stake for every person. Intentionality is missing in today's culture and in many of our churches. As I finished this book, a sense of urgency and longing filled my heart as I began to see what a privilege we women have in serving in our church. My favorite chapter was the chapter on the younger women and older women in a mentorship and being disciplined. They were beautiful letters included into hat chapter. I also enjoyed the personal stories of people who are living out the Gospel and fulfilling the role that God had place them in, and doing it joyfully and diligently.

Any woman in church, or any woman who is leading a Women's ministry, should definitely read this book. There is something for every woman within the pages of this book.

Blind Spots by Collin Hansen

When I saw this book was coming out, I was anxious to read it. To be honest, the cover, summary, and unique title of the book drew me in from the very beginning. Add to that the excellent marketing on social media, and I was looking forward to getting this book in my hands.

This is a short, yet extremely powerful book. I saw myself throughout the pages of this book. I realized, thanks to Collin Hansen's writing and teaching, that I am part of the problem with church. In fact, we all are, if we're honest. We're all gifted with compassion, courage, or commissioning. These are all excellent things to have, but they lead to their own set of blind spots. The blind spot for compassion leads to frustration that others aren't caring for the same group of people/issues as I am. Courage's blind spot can lead to pride and thinking that every thing that happens, whether in the church, your life, or political scene, is meant to argue until the other person comes around or until you are rejected. Commissioning has the blind spot of watering down the gospel because after all, the most important thing is they know and accept God. On the flip side, they have positives. Compassion moves us to action. Courage used wisely helps us pick and choose which issues we need to fight for and when to talk and when to stay quiet. Commission leads to church plants and the spread of the Gospel.

Needless to say, I had only ever seen the positives of all of these. I obviously was blinded by where my compassion might be a problem. This doesn't just cause a problem in my personal walk with Christ, but it causes a problem in the church. We tend to be with like-minded people. That's not how the church is to be. We should be challenged by those with the other gifts and learn to work together, being thankful for the gifts that others bring to the table.

This book would be an excellent book to use for small group study. It's only 118 pages with 5 chapters, but it's packed full of truth. Every person will be challenged by this book if you truly search your heart. Know your blind spot so you can fight against it. In the words of Collin Hansen, "let's see our differences as opportunity."

The Dawning of Indestructible Joy by John Piper

I was so excited to walk through Advent with some daily readings from John Piper. He is challenging to read and his love and passion for Christ flow off the pages. I knew that I would get a lot from his reminders of what Christmas is truly about and what it's not about.

As I expected, it was challenging. It was challenging in a different way than I expected. It made me want to keep my focus on Christ instead of on material things. With the loss of my grandfather right before Christmas, the cancer journey took over much of our life since June, as well as grieving my grandmother's death at Thanksgiving. With that said, I wasn't really in the "Christmas mood." This reminded me that it was okay to not feel all into the lights and traditions like I usually do. What did matter was my love for Christ and the joy Christ gives.


I read this book in about a week (could have been a lot faster), but since I was catching up front the first part of December I wanted to be sure to end by Christmas. Each day is very short and takes just a couple of minutes to read. I found that I wanted to sit and meditate on the Scripture and journal, so it took it a little longer.

This is a great book for the Christmas season, but I honestly think it's great for even those times when you just need to be reminded of the purpose of Christmas and the joy God gives.

Women's Devotional Bible (ESV) from Crossway

I saw this Bible several times in the store, but never opened it because I'm not a big fan of the devotional Bibles. It's good for some people, but I tend to like Bibles without a lot of clutter, lots of note-taking room, and not many study notes. I like digging and finding the background myself.

With that said, I received this Bible in the mail and thrilled for several reasons. One of the reasons is because I knew that several godly women, whom I enjoy reading their books, had written devotions in here. I also was excited because it looked pretty and was well-laid out. It was very aesthetically pleasing for someone who is studying God's Word. There wasn't a lot of "clutter" on the page. The down-side is that there isn't a lot of white space to take notes, but I have my other Bibles that I use that for.

This is the perfect size to carry places. It's the typical size of the Bible, but is crammed full of helpful things. I love the dictionary in the back that explains Bible terms in a simple way. I really liked the devotional that are tailored to women and really encourage women straight from the text. It's not as if the devotional takes a Scripture verse then turns it into a lesson to fix yourself. The devotional focus on God, and through that, the woman is challenged and encouraged. I greatly appreciated that difference in this Bible vs. other devotional Bibles I've seen. It keeps the focus on God, not on me.

After using it for several months, one thing I think would be extremely helpful is a concordance or some sort of system to find other scriptures related to the individual verses. There are some, but not many. There's not really a concordance, and I find there are times when that is actually helpful. I'm sure that would greatly increase the number of pages in the Bible, but that was one thing I found lacking.

Other than that, I have used this Bible non-stop. I like the layout, the neutral colors, and it is so easy to find what you need. There is so much packed into this Bible that has greatly set it apart from other devotional Bibles. I plan to use this Bible for many years to come. Once again, Crossway has put out another helpful resource that is biblically sound and God-centered (as a Bible should be).

Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin

My passion is for women and children to know the word deeply and to love it.  I have long been frustrated that so many times we aren't taught to study our Bibles, but to take our pastor's word or our Bible study leader's word for what the Bible teaches.  I'm very picky when it comes to Bible studies and books about Bible studies because so many times the books talk about how the Bible is about us.  It's not.  It's about God.

Thank you, Jen Wilkin, for a wonderful book on how to be a woman of the Word.  She was clear, concise, and spoke in everyday language.  She challenged me and affirmed me at the same time. I like how she reminded readers that the Bible is not about us.  It's about God.  We have to know who God is so we know who we are. 

While I was reading this book, all I wanted to do was to go back and study the Bible! She tells her readers how to study the Bible with: purpose, perspective, patience, process, and prayer.  I have taken those into my own quiet times and have been purposeful about adding all of these to my quiet time. It's so easy to rush through and I appreciate her reminders not to do so.

I also like the section for Teacher Help.  It was very informative on leading a group of women and things you could do and things to watch out for so as not to do.

I would love to use this study in discipleship, either with a group of women or one-on-one.  It's a good book for personal use, too.
