Thankful by Shelley Shepard Gray

Aden loves Christina.  Christina loves Aden.  Neither one know that.  Age separates them at first, but Aden is content to wait.  Then circumstances change.  Contemplating a future with each other wouldn't be bad until Aden's life changes. When Aden's parents died, Christina's family took him in and raised him.

Aden does a good job at stifling his emotions and desires to court Christina.  So many times in the book I wanted Aden to pour out his feelings to Christina.  Especially because Christina felt the same way but thought he didn't care in that way for her! 

I liked Christina's parents, but I wanted them to believe in the two of them and a future courtship.  I understood why Aden kept his feelings silent, and the guilt from a previous incident on the ice didn't help matters for either one of them.  I was cheering for them at the end of the book and wanted them to have that happy ever after!

Shelley Shepard Gray has written a great follow-up book to Hopeful, which is part of the Return to Sugarcreek series.  After reading the sneak peek for Joyful, her next book, I'm now really looking forward to reading that one, too!

Until I Found You by Victoria Bylin

I have never read any books by Victoria Bylin, but I did enjoy this book.  I was captured in the first few chapters (and even in the prologue) with all of the events and drama unfolding.  Kate's cliff nightmare was well-written and easy to imagine.  Nick was the hero who saved her life, in more ways than one.


When I read the back cover, I thought perhaps Nick would be saving Kate from awkward or funny situations. That's not the case.  It wasn't disappointing, by any means.  It just wasn't what I had thought.  Nick saved Kate in many real-life ways.  I could see this story being played out in real life

I liked Leona's letters to Kate.  They were super sweet to read.  With my Dad just recovering from a stroke, it hit me a little harder as I remembered the frustrations and emotions that go along with it. 

I honestly have never paid attention, nor really knew, what a condor looked like.  However, halfway through his book, I found myself online and searching all about condors!  They are quite fascinating!  Who would have ever thought that would make an interesting storyline, though.

This book isn't a fast-moving book.  I never lost interest in it, but it's more like a journey of Kate and her faith.

A Stitch and a Prayer by Eva Gibson

I must start my review of this book by commenting on the cover. I think this is the prettiest cover so far of all the Quilts of Love series.  The cabin at the bottom made me want to dive into his book. I think because I knew there was a story involved with it.  It also looked peaceful and inviting.  The colors blended so well on the cover from the picture, to the quilt, and to the title of book.  Some of the covers look  little busy to me, but this one did a perfect job.

I liked the whole pioneer setting of the book. I had a little trouble connecting with Florence because I don't really struggle with worry.  I felt like Florence did a lot of worrying, but I know it was for a valid reason.  With her physical struggles and then the pressure that she put on herself, she definitely could worry herself to death.  I liked Florence and understood her worries, but never felt as though she was a character I would be thinking about a lot.  Will was a little easier to connect to.  However, I do think I'd fret a little if my husband left and I had a baby coming, too!

I loved the meaning of the quilt. Florence began to take her prayers and stitches and form a beautiful quilt out of them.  I liked how she could always look at that quilt and remember how God provided and took those worries from her and covered her with strength to get through this difficult time.

A Season of Change by Lynette Sowell

I'm an avid reader of Amish fiction books. I have read about many different Amish communities in these books. Some are real, some are fiction.  I liked Pinecraft, which is a community in Sarasota, Florida.  It is a place where many Amish vacation.  Things are not done the same way in Pinecraft as it is in other communities.  In some ways, they have to work harder to keep the "worldliness" out because of all the tourists.  Add a beach and you have lots of temptations.

Jacob and Natalie were meant to be together. I found it neat that Natalie was able to locate her family and be a part of them in a small way. I didn't want Jacob to like any of the other girls.  However, I did feel bad for Betsy.  I'm wondering if her story will be told the next book.

My favorite person would have to be Rachel.  She was such a voice of reason and loving.  She was an encouragement and didn't seem like she believed in the legalism aspect.  I was glad she didn't leave Pinecraft and decided to stay there despite the trials and lack of family that were there.

This scene was different not only because of it being Pinecraft, but also because Natalie has worked with the circus. She enjoys performing using the silks and does it very elegantly.

I enjoyed this story and am looking forward to the next book in the Seasons of Pinecraft series.

Rise and Shine by Sabdra D. Bricker

What girl, young or old, doesn't like a good fairy tale?  I mean, seriously?!  Why is Disney so popular?! I think Sandra D. Bricker had a great idea when she considered writing a modern-day series based on classic, popular fairy tales.

It doesn't take too long to figure out which story is paralleled in Rise & Shine.  Shannon has been in a coma for the past 10 years after a horrible accident.  Hmmm... which fairytale story involves a woman in a coma... or a deep sleep?

I found this book to be so much fun. I considered it a light-hearted book in a way because it was an easy book to read. However, there were so many things brought out that made me wonder how people really do feel when they wake up from being in a coma.

In Shannon's case, she has to figure out how to move on in her life after not being a part of it for 10 years. So much has happened that it's like she has to start all over again. Edmund amazed me as he stood by to care for his new wife while she was in her coma.  It was sad when he died and even worse when Shannon found out this news. Not only is she finding a new normal, but she's finding it without the one man she longed to be married to.

I've read most of the books by Sandra D. Bricker and have really enjoyed all of them.  She writes with humor and passion.

Somebody Like You by Beth K. Vogt

Haley Ames has had her life turned upside down.  What should have been a wonderful, exciting time in her life as she welcomes a baby into her life has turned into something heartbreaking.  Haley's husband has died and she is left with "what would have been."

Haley's husband, Sam, is a twin.  His brother, Stephen, has entered into Haley's life and now Haley has a stream of conflicting emotions.  All types of things run through her head as she meets Sam. 

Beth K. Vogt was able to put some surprise elements into a book that is very emotional.  It was hard to not cry over the death of Sam and it was hard not to laugh over how Haley meets Sam's brother.  I felt like I was on an emotional roller coaster as I considered how I might feel if I met someone who looked just like my husband.  Then to have a child and wrestle with liking Stephen so soon after her husband has gone would be so much.

I liked this book and how beautiful of a story it was.  It wasn't a feel-good romance novel because of the loss, but it was a beautiful story of grace and mercy.

Pelican Bride by Beth White

The cover of this book is beautiful.  I like the picture and the elegant writing on the cover.  The light, contrasting colors are beautiful and eye-catching.

Pelican Bride is the first book in the Gulf Coast Chronicles series and it's a great start. Beth White is a new author to me, but I really enjoyed this story.  I will definitely be reading the rest of the books in this series.  She kept my attention and I really liked the history found in this book.

Geneviève Gallatin and her sister made some choices so that they would finally be free of religious persecution.  They were willing to give up their land (which wasn't horribly hard to do because of the persecution) and their comfort and personal wills. They planned to marry men they didn't know so that they could start fresh new lives and worship freely.  The escape from their homeland was intense and full of suspense.  I was anxiously awaiting them to be free of the horrid king.

Of course, a lot of things go wrong when they get to their new homes.  Geneviève has a lot of looking out to do for her little sister that has so much to learn.  There are false charges, mistakes, and choices made on their journey to a new life.

Fly a Little Higher by Laura Sobiech

I followed Zach's story through the blog that was kept for him. I even downloaded his music when it came out on iTunes and found myself singing "Clouds" in my head when I was going about my everyday activities.  That always led me to pray for Zach and this family. I watched the documentary and cried.  All of that to say that when I saw this book coming out, I marked the day down and anticipated reading Laura's story. Actually, it's Zach's story told by Laura, his mother.

Zach is a boy that any mother would be grateful to have as a son.  He is a teen who walked through a dark valley with joy and peace knowing that he was going to be with Jesus.  There was still grief, but there was also joy.

I cried through this story, as I knew I would.  My mother's heart kept hurting for Laura and her family.  I am amazed how they were able to marry their daughter off a week later and entered the same church they had just used for their son's funeral.  I can only imagine the war of emotions inside all of them. 

Zach was a talented young man.  I was grateful to use his song "Clouds" in one of music therapy sessions.  The kids really liked talking about it.  I know I will be using it often in more sessions.  Zach lived a full life in his short years.  His girlfriend is not to be forgotten, either.  She was there for him and loved him to the end, and he did her.

Zach's story will be told over and over and will not be forgotten.  Thank you, Laura, for sharing this beautiful story of your son with all of us who prayed for him from afar.

Seasons of Tomorrow by Cindy Woodsmall

Cindy Woodsmall is one of my top favorite Amish authors.  I easily connect with the characters and find myself relaxed and intrigued as I read any book her.  He Amish Vines and Orchards series has been my favorite series by her... although I say that about each series she writes. I hate for her to start a new series and leave my favorites!

I found the whole starting an Amish settlement from scratch very interesting.  The dynamics between the two families is just like any other family and they have to learn to work together to make it work.

Rhoda makes things a bit uncomfortable when she has visions about people.  First it was their neighbors and now it's that someone is going to die.  She thinks she knows who it is, but isn't certain.  Someone does end up sick and near death, but the suspense is well-played out. I was hoping for the best but preparing for the worst. 

I wanted them to succeed in this community and continue it.  There are some questions as to whether or not they will be able to do so.

I'm curious what Cindy Woodsmall is planning for her next series!

Mark of Distinction by Jessica Dotta

I've looked forward to this book ever since I read the first on in this series.  I like the mysterious covers and the great story inside.  Mark of Distinction picks up where the first one left off.  I'm glad that she sticks with Julia instead of introducing another main character.  I really like it when authors let us really connect with a few characters that continue throughout a series.

Julie now knows who her father is, but danger is still all around her.  She's not being treated as the valued woman that she is.  Instead, she's being used to form the wishes of other powerful people.  She wants to be free of all of this, but it's not that easy.

The mysterious covers of this trilogy is not by accident.  There are so many secrets and so many people who are threatening to tell the real truth if they don't get their way.  The secrets are the action and it leaves you turning pages far longer than the time set aside to read "just a few pages."

I am looking forward to book 3 in the series. I hope it's not to long to wait!

Love Comes Calling by Siri Mitchell

A friend of mine first introduced me to Siri Mitchell and I think I've read every book by her since then.  One day, I'll go back and read all of her earlier books.  I am always sucked into her books from the very first paragraph.  This book was no exception.

Ellis is a girl that was definitely fun to read about her thoughts and her train of thought.  I could see how her parents and teachers, and probably friends, could be exasperated with her.  Knowing her thoughts made Griffin Phillips really seem like a prince after all that he overlooked.

I had many favorite scenes, but I loved the lengths she went to in order to avoid Griffin.  I laughed out loud at many of her escapes.  I did feel bad for her because she felt like everything she did turned out wrong and that she wasn't pleasing anyone.

I can't imagine being thrown into the role of a telephone operator and being expected to know it all with only a few minutes training. That's another part I found funny, as well! 

Ellis is one of those girls that would drive me crazy, but that I couldn't help but love.  Her thought and attention are so scattered!  It was very clear that she had ADHD and no one knew what to do with her!  I found the Prohibition part interesting as well... as far as the poor being punished and at the rich being let of the hook.

Chateau of Secrets by Melanie Dobson

I tend to seek out books by Melanie Dobson.  When I saw the cover of this book with her name on it, it threw me for a loop! I hadn't expected her to write a book about WWII.  I'm not certain why I had put her into a box, but I did. It was wonderful to see this side of her.  I enjoyed this entire book and had a hard time separating myself from it.

The thing that fascinated me the most was how this was based on a true story, although a few liberties were taken.  I have read a lot on WWII and appreciated the new scenes that she painted in my head at that time. It seems like I've read several books on this time period lately, so I thought it would be hard to beat those.  However, I think it matched them in my top books!

I really think this book had it all. It kept my heart racing at moments and then it brought tears to my eyes in others.  At times I just had to smile at the visions in my head. 

I hope Melanie Dobson plans to write more in this time period.  She did a great job with the storytelling and research.  In my personal opinion, I think this book is the best book she as written so far.

Minding Molly by Leslie Gould

I really like this series, The Courtship of Lancaster County.  Minding Molly is the third book in this series.  After reading the previous two books, I think I easily related to Miss Molly. I have a tendency to want to be in control of things and it reminded me constantly of how purposeful I need to be to continue to hand it over to the Lord.

I also liked the part about Mary and Martha. I had never thought about them in the same way as this book mentioned, but I'm so glad this was brought out.  Then it hit me.... how often do I do the work for myself or for others and complain instead of doing it for the Lord.  I appreciated that very real visual in a fiction book.

I really liked the ending and although I had suspicions about how it would end, I was glad it ended the way I wanted it to.... yikes... is that another control issue?  I liked both Mervin and Leon, but I did have my favorite of the two.  I can't say who or it will give it away, though!

Another thing I appreciated in this book is how she tied in Cate and Addie.  I already felt like I had known them well, so it was nice to have them involved in this book, too.

I was reading the acknowledgments and found it fascinating that this book (and the other 2 in this series) was inspired out of Shakespeare's plays.  I never would have guessed, although I haven't read Shakespeare since high school.

Fair Play by Deeanne Gist

I have thoroughly enjoyed every book I have ever read by Deeanne Gist, which I think I have read them all.  I was wrapped up in the Chicago World's Fair and the year of  1893.  I felt like I was experiencing the fair myself. 

I enjoyed the complete story but I really appreciated how much history filled this fictional story.  I felt like there was so much in this book and it and it had a perfect balance of fiction and history. I liked how Billy, the woman doctor... which wasn't popular at this time... and Hunter, the ranger, got past all of their frustrations and worked together with a share passion.

They saw what was happening with young children, thanks to an infant being abandoned. As they were trying to find a place for this baby, their eyes were opened to the crimes being committed by young children.  They were determined to figure how they could help change the lives of these children who were left in such hopeless situations.

On a side note, I really like the cover of this book.  I think it is beautiful, with the Ferris Wheel in the background and the beautiful lake.  I'm looking forward to what Deanne Gist will write next!

Manual to Manhood by Jonathan Catherman

I'll admit.... at first I thought some things in this book were a little silly.  I thought this not because boys need to know them, but because some of these things seem like common sense.  For example, applying deodorant, applying hair style gels, and washing your face.  I still find them a little silly to have to explain, but I do think some boys are never taught to even wear these things. Once I thought about that, it made it not so silly.

If you're a boy, this would be a great book to use as a checklist.  What fun to have with your dad or another man that you respect and have them show these things to you, too.  The topics are very wide, with women, social skills, work, ethics, wealth & money management, grooming & personal hygiene, clothes & style, sports & recreation, cars & driving, food & cooking, and tools & fix-it.

When I think back to my teen years, there were probably some common sense things I wanted to know and be assured I was doing correctly, but didn't want to ask anyone.  This would be a good assurance book or unsure teen and pre-teen boys. In fact, on the back of the book, it says, "The world needs confident and capable young men.". This is definitely a guide for that!  How lucky would this boys wife be, if he could do ALL of these things!

Mom Seeks God by Julia Roller

I have really been wanting to study in-depth the spiritual discipline and work on these habits.  I confess that, like Julia Roller, I have put it off.  Sometimes it seems so overwhelming to study them and practice them because of all the time I need to really study it.  However, I've been convicted that I don't need to put it off any longer.  If ever a time I need these disciplines, it's right now.

I appreciated the honesty in this book and how she freely shares her struggles in parenting and how she sought to practice the spiritual disciplines in the midst of the little years.  As I was reading the chapter on Fellowship: Letting Others In, I felt like she was peeking in on my life.  I am an introvert, too, so that one's hard for me... especially large groups.  It was so strange to read about myself in a book!

This book reflects a year that Julia Roller spent studying the disciplines and applying one a month.  I really like this idea and plan to go back through this book and adding more Scripture and study of my own.  She has application at the end of each chapter too, that I really want to ponder on and act on.
