Forever Amish by Kate Lloyd

I liked the twist in this final book in the Legacy of Lancaster Trilogy.  The mystery is kept a secret for much of the book about Sally's family.  We know that she has a sick father, but we don't know anything about her mother or her Father's family.  However, we also get to know Lizzie and her family.  I will admit that the whole meeting between Sally and Lizzie is a bit odd.  I knew something was up, but I couldn't figure it out at first.  As the story grew, I started to have some suspicions as to what was up, but I liked how the story was withheld for so long.

I personally liked Armin.  He is a hard-working man who is easy to like.  I enjoyed all of the wild thoughts that Sally had about him and Rhoda.  Isn't it so easy to just jump to conclusions about people?!

Even though this is part of a series, you don't have to have read the first two to enjoy this one.  It easily can stand alone as a novel or as part of the series.

Rival Hearts by Tara Randel

I like the cover of this book. I have read most books in this series and think that the covers get better with each book.  That's hard to do considering I have really like most of them.  I also like the different stories that each author tells. That's what makes this series a lot of fun to read... the uniqueness of each story all tied together with a quilt.

I can't say that this book is full of surprises, but it's still a great read.  I think it would be an excellent choice for the beach because it  was a light book, but fun.

Ben and Molly were two characters that you couldn't help but like.  They were made for each other, only they didn't quite recognize that at first.  Their opposite personalities made them very easy to relate to them. 

I liked the competition in this book. It was a different aspect to a love story that made it interesting and set it apart from others in the series.  It kept my attention and I found myself smiling a lot!

I suspect we'll be reading more from area Randel over the next few years.  At least, I hope so!

Women of the Word by Jen Wilkin

My passion is for women and children to know the word deeply and to love it.  I have long been frustrated that so many times we aren't taught to study our Bibles, but to take our pastor's word or our Bible study leader's word for what the Bible teaches.  I'm very picky when it comes to Bible studies and books about Bible studies because so many times the books talk about how the Bible is about us.  It's not.  It's about God.

Thank you, Jen Wilkin, for a wonderful book on how to be a woman of the Word.  She was clear, concise, and spoke in everyday language.  She challenged me and affirmed me at the same time. I like how she reminded readers that the Bible is not about us.  It's about God.  We have to know who God is so we know who we are. 

While I was reading this book, all I wanted to do was to go back and study the Bible! She tells her readers how to study the Bible with: purpose, perspective, patience, process, and prayer.  I have taken those into my own quiet times and have been purposeful about adding all of these to my quiet time. It's so easy to rush through and I appreciate her reminders not to do so.

I also like the section for Teacher Help.  It was very informative on leading a group of women and things you could do and things to watch out for so as not to do.

I would love to use this study in discipleship, either with a group of women or one-on-one.  It's a good book for personal use, too.

The Family of Jesus by Karen Kingsbury

Wow!  After having spent this whole year in the book of Matthew for my personal study, I'm so glad this book came at the time of my final few chapters of study.  This was a beautiful way to end my Matthew study.  I came to love Joseph, Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, James, and John the Baptist in a new way.

I think it's easy to de-personalize the characters in the Bible since information about many of them is limited.  Then there's some who were so close to God or so close to Jesus that we forget that they could possibly be scared or have normal feelings like we do. 

One person I always did that to was John the Baptist.  I never stopped to think about his lonely time in prison and how he was left with his own thoughts. I'm sure he battled fears and disappointment.  I loved stopping to really ponder who these people were and remind myself they were, in fact, humans too. 

There is a Bible study at the end that you could easily do as a small group study, Women's study, or personal study.  It has personal questions for personal study and then group discussion questions.

It's hard to beat the Baxter series, but I think this book is my favorite so far.  I hope she does more with the people in the Bible, such as others in the line of Jesus.  There's a hint of that happening with this being part of the Life-Changing Bible Study Series.

I Need Some Help Here by Kathi Lipp

I couldn't help but laugh when I saw the cover of this book.  I feel like this picture sums up some of the days I have and have had! That automatically made me interested in this book.  In fact, it was what made me want to read it.  I knew someone wrote about what I could easily relate to!

Kathi Lapp does a great job encouraging moms who have children that are struggling, making poor choices, not wanting a relationship with God, or who are being left out.  There is so much more talked about in these pages.  This book has something for anyone who has a child from a toddler to a teenager.

Parenting is hard enough as it is, but I think it's also hard to deal with ourselves as moms.  There are so many choices and so many things we want to teach our children so they don't have to learn the hard way.

I liked the chapter where she talks about her child with Down Syndrome.  The gifts she has received from him were simply beautiful.  I think if we stop to really think about it, from atop the trench, we can see the gifts our own children give us.  I laugh because when my children are gone, I always find myself missing their silly quirks and those things that drive me to my wits end!

Each chapter has a story from the trenches, practical steps, prayers for my child, and prayers for myself.  I think it's so important that we're not only praying for our child to change, but also us.

I also liked the chapter on shame.  I think I fall into that at sometimes and will probably fall into this more often than not.  I was very encouraged by her words throughout that section.

Out of the Ruins by Karen Barnett

First of all, I must say that the cover of this book is beautiful.  I like how they blended the top big picture with the smaller picture of the town.  He colors blended well and were tied together with the blue banner and the font.  It is very eye-catching and beautiful to look at.

This fiction book is so full of history.  I had absolutely no idea about the earthquake in 1906, nor about the devastation that it caused.  I also found the experimental treatment for Abby's sister interesting. 

I felt like I could really relate to this book because of Abby.  I'm in a storm now (for some of the same reasons as Abby) and feel like things are crashing down all around, just as Abby felt. However, I know that out of the ruins, something beautiful and refined with come out. My heart hurt for Abby as I could relate to her pain of watching her sister dying and the doctors not knowing what else to do.  I cheered for Robert in his experimental treatment for Abby.  I so desperately wanted it to work.  I saw a lot of myself as Abby as we're walking along one of the same paths she did.

This book was read at just the right time for me.  I know it's a fiction book, but it was a great encouragement to me to be reminded of Out of the Ruins.

A Woman of Fortune by Kellie Coates Gilbert

I somehow missed reading the début novel by Kellie Coates Gilbert.  Needless to say, I plan to go back and read it now that I have read this book.  I had a hard time putting this book down so I could actually be productive throughout the day!

I found the basis for this story very interesting.  The public and very humiliating lessons are often the most painful and embarrassing.  The Massey family truly has it all.  They are quite the wealthy family.  All is going well until one day when they are exposed for fraud.

Needless to say, since they a very wealthy family, the media has quite the time with this breaking news story.  Speculations are made, accusations and opinions are formed, and reputations are destroyed.  They now find themselves at the rock bottom.

As relationships work themselves out within the family and friends, you can begin to imagine the amount of forgiveness, mercy, grace, and love that has to be poured out over these deep scars.  Choices are made that have consequences.  Repentance needs to be sought.

I really liked the cover of this book, as well.  It very clearly depicts what the story might be about and the type of family that is being described.  It made it very easy to see the amount of the Massey family's wealth through this picture.

I look forward to going back and reading her first book.

The Lawman's Oklahoma Sweetheart by Allie Pleiter

This book was such a fast read.... not just because it was a small book, but also because the story kept me engaged.  Katrina is a girl that you just can't help but like.  She came to here expecting to encounter danger as she is in a new land, but she didn't realize that the danger would happen in her very own home.

Katrine has to say goodbye to her brother for a little bit in order to protect their family.  But in order for this plan to work, Katrina can't know where her brother, Lars, is and must pretend that he died in the fire. She has to watch everyone mourn her brother with others as she is really missing his presence.

I liked how Clint protected Katrine in the absence of Lars. He was even willing to risk his life for her.  In order to protect her and Lars, he had to get in good with the gang who wanted nothing more than to murder. 

I haven't read any other books in the series of Bridegroom Brothers, but I really did enjoy this book.

Finding Spiritual Whitespace by Bonnie Gray

Bonnie Gray writes this book with such honesty.  The pages are filled with her own personal journey with PTSD and anxiety. Not only that, but the book takes her on a journey to rest. I want to go back through this book at a slower pace and spend some time journaling and reflecting on the things mentioned in this book.

I was challenged by the idea of rest. We all know we need it and hear that we are to rest in God. However, how many are truly doing that? Rest is a word that I really want to study and meditate on. I think this book jumpstarted my study! 

There was so much reflection that each chapter in this book offers. There are both practical, physical things to consider and spiritual things that we need to look at.

The thing that I thought a lot about as I was reading is that if I'm honest with myself, idols interfere a lot with me resting in God. I don't think that we realize just how much "stuff" we cram into our lives and how little "Jesus" we give time for. We fill it up with good things, but not necessarily with Jesus. We do and forget that in order to do, we have to know Him. Knowing Him comes with those quiet times.

This would be a wonderful study with a women's group or with a small group of women. There would be a lot of time for reflection and discussion.

If I had to sum up this book in one word, it would be "forgiveness." As I thought about what I would do in this situation, it broke my heart. I felt for Addie and for Celia. I wanted Celia to be loved and absolutely hated Ty's foolish choices. I don't think he realized how that one choice could affect so many people and change so many lives. I can easily relate to that. How many choices do we make that affect so many for good or bad?

I didn't like Ty at first. His selfishness made me want to give him a good talking to. I eventually got over my frustration with him and he found a way for me to like him.  I found him humorous in some parts of the story.

My son is a huge bull riding fan, so I liked this aspect of the book.  It was a nice change to the typical contemporary novels.

I have really enjoyed all of the books by Becky Wade.  She knows how to grip her readers and not let them go!  Can't wait to see what's next!

All My Belongings by Cynthia Ruchti

Ever since I read "When the Morning Glory Blooms by Cynthia Ruchti, I have been looking forward to another book by her.  I really enjoyed the relaxing read of the other book and had hope that this one was the same.  I could tell just by the cover that it was going to be relaxing and just as beautiful of a story as the other one.  The cover was beautifully done and is perfect for this book.

So many different topics are dealt with in this book, but the one that gripped my attention the most was the mercy killing. Becca had such shame of her past.  She wasn't ashamed of her decisions... but of the decisions her father made.  He had tainted his family's name in their small town.  The only way Becca can move on is to change her name.  That works great until one day when her true identify is revealed and she as to deal with some accusations.

I had a hard time even imagining the idea of being ashamed of your family name. I know may people who are, but I personally haven't had that experience.  It has to be incredibly hard to try to start a new life for yourself when all people do is compare you to the failures of your parents/family.  It made me think a lot about how often I do that to people without realizing it.

Pride, Prejudice, and Cheese Grits by Mary Jane Hathaway

I absolutely loved everything about this book. The cover is beautiful and quite stunning.  The font of the front of the story is fun and I think it captures the essence of the story: Classics meets the south.

I really like Jane Austen and when I saw this book, I knew I would have to read it. Pride & Prejudice is one of my favorite books by Jane Austen so I was excited to see this adaptation. I mean, who doesn't like Mr. Darcy?!

I found this book quite enjoyable to read. I had moments where I laughed out loud as I compared Elizabeth with Shelby and Mr. Darcy with Ransom. I liked the setting of the history building/classroom and teaching. Even Shelby's mom was just as dramatic as Elizabeth.  I also liked the modern-day comparison of Elizabeth's sisters with Shelby's sisters.

My favorite scene was actually what set Shelby's career in a down-spiral. I couldn't help but laugh when Ransom was trying so hard to keep a stern face as Shelby got her point across in front of all of this class!

I'm really looking forward to the south meeting more of Jane Austen in Emma, Mr. Knightly and Chili-Slaw Dogs that has already come out and is available to read.

A Place in His Heart by Rebecca Demarino

The whole time I was reading this book, I couldn't help but think how fun the research was for this book. I also think it holds a special place in her heart for 2 reasons: one being that it is her début novel and second because it involves her family history.

I was kept engaged throughout the entire book. It was very well-written to be a first novel. It was not evident to me until I read her biography. I hope she continues to write because she definitely has a talent.

I was frustrated with Mary's father and his not listening to Mary. I wanted him to listen to her and not push her to marry a man she didn't love. I know that was how they did it during the 1600s, but I can't imagine that!  Barnabas was not worthy of Mary, in my opinion. I understood where he came from, but I wanted Mary to be loved and cherished. I was amazed at the sacrifices Mary was willing to make, even to a man who didn't know he could offer her a loving marriage.

This is the first book in the Southold Chronicles series. I look forward to rest of this series and am curious if more of the author's family history will be used.

The Heart's Pursuit by Robin Lee Hatcher

I always look forward to any book that is by Robin Lee Hatcher.  She tells such wonderful stories and I know that I won't be disappointed by them.  I liked this side of her writing, though it wasn't her typical style (and she admits that).  She did a wonderful job capturing my attention and getting me excited about her book.

I really like the cover of this book.  It's beautifully done and I think it easily shows what the book is about and the type of book.  The font on the title of the book is perfect for the cover, too.  Well done!

I was a little surprised at the amount of action that was in this book. It has romance, but it also has many exciting scenes of suspense and action.  It's probably not considered much to those who like to read a lot of action novels, but for me, this was just the right amount that I could handle!

Silver is one of those people that I think many want to be.  She's not your typical woman and I think that's why I like her so much.  She never acts helpless, but isn't afraid to fight for justice.  I liked imagining her on her horse and in control.... or at least acting like it!  She has to learn to do some trusting along the way, though.

I am looking forward to the next book in the Christian Romance series.

A Place in His Heart by Rebecca Demarino

The whole time I was reading this book, I couldn't help but think how fun the research was for this book. I also think it holds a special place in her heart for 2 reasons: one being that it is her début novel and second because it involves her family history.

I was kept engaged throughout the entire book. It was very well-written to be a first novel. It was not evident to me until I read her biography. I hope she continues to write because she definitely has a talent.

I was frustrated with Mary's father and his not listening to Mary. I wanted him to listen to her and not push her to marry a man she didn't love. I know that was how they did it during the 1600s, but I can't imagine that!  Barnabas was not worthy of Mary, in my opinion. I understood where he came from, but I wanted Mary to be loved and cherished. I was amazed at the sacrifices Mary was willing to make, even to a man who didn't know he could offer her a loving marriage.

This is the first book in the Southold Chronicles series. I look forward to rest of this series and am curious if more of the author's family history will be used.

Rebecca DeMarino was born in Pensacola, Florida, the daughter of a Navy pilot. Her mother made a home for the family of six all over the map, including Virginia, Nevada, California, Washington, and Guam, before her parents put down anchor on a ranch in Oregon.

As the wife of a young Air Force officer, married life brought more travel. She relied on her mother’s example of how to make a home anywhere. Her three beautiful daughters were born in Florida, Alaska and Nebraska.

Rebecca grew up listening to her mother’s family lore of a great-grandfather from generations ago. Mom's Night Out and other things I miss...by Kerri Pomarolli

This would be a good baby shower gift.  New, first-time moms may not fully appreciate it at the time, but they would eventually.  It would be an encouraging gift for new and old moms, especially those with little ones.  I would also pair it with a devotional that has more Scripture, since that's what is most important.

My only dislike about this book is that it's more like a self-help book in a way.  I wouldn't classify it as a book that points you back to the Word and encourages you to spend time in the Word, even in those desperate times during parenting.  This book wouldn't be what I would read to grow in my relationship with the Lord.  It does have Scripture verses before each devotional.  I feel like so much more could be brought out in the Scriptures to those moms who feel at the end of themselves.  I think that's where we need to be pointed to our eternal purpose in parenting.

With that said, it is a book that has lots of devotions.  The devotions themselves can be read in less than 5 minutes.  Then it has a section to think about.

Mom's Night Out by Tricia Goyer

I read this book and saw the movie and absolutely love them both!  Tricia Goyer did a wonderful job sticking to the movie.  This is one book that resembles the movie very closely, which I'm thankful for!

I found these circumstances hilarious.  I had no problem relating to Allyson.  I felt like at some times during the story, I was reading about myself and my family!  I've had that desperation feeling and I've had that longing for adult interaction.  I've also had those planned trips that never turned out like I thought they would.

I liked the discussion questions at the end of the book. I think this would be a fun book club book to discuss. I can even imagine moms getting together and reading it and discussing it... then perhaps having a mom's night out to watch the movie again.

I hope more movies/books are put out that are like this one! It as encouraging, hilarious, and even brought tears to my eyes.

While Love Stirs by Lorna Seilstad

I really like the cover on this book.  I like the fading colors in the back and the sharp, beautiful colors of the girl on the front.  I found it to be very appealing and drew me to the book.

I was really glad that Charlotte was featured in this book, which is the second book in the Gregory Sisters series.  She reminds me of who I would like to be sometimes!  (Don't worry... I'm not!). She's fiesta and has a strong personality that helps her in where she is wanting to go.  However, she also has a lot to figure out when it comes to God and laying down her will.

I got a lot of good laughs between Joel and Charlotte!  I found their encounters refreshing and in many instances, just funny.  Their quirks were fun to imagine a marriage with!

I like all of the Gregory sisters so I liked the update on Hannah.  I'm hoping Tessa gets the main feature in the next book.  I can only imagine how great that book will be with Tessa's personality!  I bet that Lorna Seilstad has a lot of fun writing these books and conjuring up the different scenarios!

I like historical fiction, but I think the history in these books make the story even better.  It's not heavy history, but it's definitely enough to set the stage and give you an understanding of the time period.

One More Last Chance by Cathleen Armstrong

I have looked forward to heading back to Last Chance since the last book in this series.  I really enjoyed the last book and had a hard time putting that one down.  I knew this one would probably be the same way, so it was hard not to read it when I got it!

I got a few chuckles out of the difference in personalities between Sarah Cooley and Chris Reed.  Sarah is a woman who is searching for solace in a place that she's known to never change.  Chris is yearning to shake things up in this place that never changes.  You can already imagine how these two might clash in some ways!

I think Sarah was really easy for me to relate to because I don't particularly like change either. In fact, it takes me out of my comfort zone and I don't like that!  So I could relate to wanting to go back to predictable, especially after being heartbroken.

What I like most about this book is that it's about Sarah and Chris, but there are also other outside relationships that add such a wonderful story.  I think that makes it have more depth and adds to the bonding I had with certain characters.  I couldn't help but be amazed with Chris, though.

I'm already looking forward to returning to Last Chance again in what I'm hoping is the near future!

One Perfect Spring by Irene Hannon

I really like this side of Irene Hannon.  I like her mystery books, but I think these are my favorite books by her.  Part of that is because I'm not a huge fan of mystery/suspense books, though.  These books are right up my alley and leave me feeling like I've jumped into real life scenarios.

One thing that I appreciate about Hannon's books are that the story is never predictable. Just when you think you may have an idea, there's a twist.  I find myself battling (and usually losing) not to turn to the end to see how it ends so that I'm not all worried if I'm going to be sad at the end!  Yes.... I'm one of those people.

Keith annoyed me at first, to be completely honest.  I figured that there was no way I would ever come around to like him!  I really like how real Claire is as a character and how easy she was to picture in my head.  I felt like I jumped in her shoes and saw her struggles.

I've enjoyed these past 2 contemporary novels so much. I really hope there's more!  I'm impressed by authors that can jump around to different style of writing so easily.
